Karnataka has firmed up plans to establish 'data parks' with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatt (MW) across Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru, following a high-level meeting of state ministers on Thursday.

The meeting, held at Bengaluru, was attended by energy minister KJ George, industries minister MB Patil, and IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening industrial growth through green digital infrastructure, the industries department said in a statement.

A 500 MW data park will be developed near Hoskote in Bengaluru. Solar power generated at Pavagada will be directly supplied to the facility.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has indicated it can provide 60 million litres per day (MLD) of secondary treated water, while companies operating within the park will undertake tertiary treatment, the statement added.

Secondary treatment removes 80-90% of contaminants from wastewater; tertiary treatment removes the rest.

In Mangaluru, around 350 acres in the Baikampady Industrial Area, owned by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), has been identified for a data park. The government will also identify suitable land in Mysuru for a similar facility.

The state will ensure power and water supply to investors setting up data centres in these parks. Officials have been directed to initiate preparatory work and engage with potential investors in the coming weeks.

In the next phase, a committee of ministers, including deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, who also holds the water resources portfolio, along with senior officials, will be constituted to fast-track the implementation.
