India has emerged as the world’s third-most competitive country in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, as per Stanford University’s Global AI Vibrancy Tool.

The latest ranking underscores India’s expanding tech ecosystem and deepening talent pool as the country tries to surge ahead in the global AI race.

Per the data, the United States holds a commanding lead with a vibrancy score of 78.6, while China follows with a score of 36.95, followed by India with 21.59. India is ahead of several advanced economies including South Korea, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Germany, and France.

Stanford’s AI Vibrancy Tool aggregates various indicators into a composite score to assess the development and competitiveness of national AI ecosystems. Its metrics include research and development, talent, investment, economic impact, infrastructure, and policy. This is used to identify where the tech is progressing and the level of government commitment.

The numbers also show that there is a correlation between income levels and AI competitiveness. While high-income nations dominate the top rankings, upper-middle-income countries like China and Brazil are steadily narrowing the gap. India stands out as an exception among lower-middle-income countries, being the only one to rank so highly.

Leadership varies across specific metrics. The United States leads in categories like research and development, responsible AI, economy, policy, and infrastructure. China is on top in economy and infrastructure. India ranks among the top three for talent. However, the report also highlights a broader concern: the widening gap between nations could exacerbate global inequality if access to AI advancements remains uneven.
