India was among the top requesting countries to remove content last year, microblogging platform Twitter said on Tuesday adding that it received approximately 53,000 legal requests to remove content from governments across the globe from January 1 to June 30, 2022.

The top requesting countries were Japan, South Korea, Turkey and India, it said.

In addition to this, the Elon Musk-owned platform said it received more than 16,000 government information requests for user data from over 85 countries during the reporting period.

It said that while disclosure rates vary by requester country, the top five requesting countries seeking account information in H1 2022 were India, the United States, France, Japan, and Germany.

"As we review our approach to transparency reporting in light of innovations in content moderation and changes in the regulatory landscape, we believe it’s important to share data from H1 2022 on our health & safety efforts. We won’t be publishing a formal transparency report for this period (January 1 - June 30, 2022) in our previous format," the company said in a blog post.

It said that over the reporting period, Twitter required users to remove 6,586,109 pieces of content that violated the Twitter Rules, an increase of 29% from H2 2021.

Further, it said it took enforcement action based on 14 policies on 5,096,272 accounts during this period (a 20% increase), and 1,618,855 accounts were suspended for violating the Twitter Rules (a 28% increase).

The most amount of accounts or content were taken down when it came to hateful conduct, abuse or harassment, child sexual exploitation and sensitive media.
