The government is aware of the possible risk and challenges of online gaming, including the risk of “violence abetting video games, addiction to it, and consequential financial loss,” the minister of state for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Chandrasekhar said that the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code, better known as the Information Technology Rules of 2021, prescribe the obligations for internet intermediaries to observe due diligence to ensure no harm is caused to children.

“The rules cast specific obligation on intermediaries to observe due diligence by making reasonable efforts to cause its user not to host, display, publish, transmit or share any information that is harmful to the child, causes incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence, relates to encourages gambling, or violates any law for the time being in force,” Chandrasekhar told the lower house.

However, at the moment, the government is not considering any proposal to limit the time spent by gamers playing online games, he said in his reply.
