The funding will support training programmes across more than 20 states, working with 14 labour unions and four trade and contractor associations.
“America’s digital economy relies on our physical infrastructure and the electricians, pipefitters, welders, manufacturing workers and more who build and maintain it,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X.
He added that the new commitment builds on over $1 billion the company has already provided globally for digital skills and training.
The company said the funding will go to training organisations responsible for developing apprenticeship and certification programmes, with a focus on equipping workers with industry-recognised skills and credentials.
TradesFutures will help more people enter construction jobs by expanding training programmes and improving job placements. The Electrical Training Alliance will set up mobile training centres in areas with high worker demand.
The United Association’s training fund will expand training for plumbing and HVAC jobs (work related to heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems) over the next five years.
Separately, the sheet metal industry’s training institute will update its courses and use AI tools to help address worker shortages.
