Google chief executive Sundar Pichai on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) posted, "Exciting news! Today, we're launching the Gemini mobile app in India, available in English and nine Indian languages. We’re also adding these local languages to Gemini Advanced, plus other new features, and launching Gemini in Google Messages in English."
New features in Gemini Advanced include new data analysis capabilities and file uploads, and the ability to chat with Gemini in Google Messages, starting in English.
The app allows you to type, talk, or add an image to get assistance. For example, one can take a picture of a flat tire for instructions on how to change it. On iOS, however, Gemini access is rolling out from the Google app over the next few weeks.
Amar Subramanya, vice president, engineering, Gemini experiences, in a blog post said, "Gemini has had an exciting first year in India. We've been thrilled to see how people across the country are using it to collaborate with AI in diverse ways — be it for schoolwork, coding, or creative exploration. From students to developers and many other curious minds, people in India are embracing Gemini's capabilities to enhance their productivity, learning, and creativity in everyday life."
To access Gemini on Android, one can download the Gemini app or opt-in through Google Assistant. One can then use Gemini by corner swiping, hitting the power button on select phones, or saying "Hey Google."
This enables a new overlay experience with easy access to Gemini and contextual help on the screen. Many voice features in Google Assistant will be available through the Gemini app — including setting timers, making calls and setting reminders.
Google is bringing Gemini 1.5 Pro, its most advanced model, to Gemini Advanced in the above mentioned nine Indian languages.
This expanded capacity unlocks new features for Gemini Advanced such as document uploads. One can upload multiple large documents, up to 1,500-pages total, or summarise 100 emails.
One can also tackle complex data analysis tasks by uploading spreadsheets (Google Sheets, CSVs, Excel).
Gemini Advanced can now clean, explore, analyse, and visualise data, transforming it into interactive charts and graphs. So whether it's figuring out patterns in expenses or the average total sales of a small business, Gemini Advanced can act as a personal data analyst, uncovering insights and building custom visualisations on the fly.
Gemini keeps files private, and they’re not used to train its models.
Google is also introducing Gemini in Google Messages to for another way to collaborate with Gemini on phone. One can get help drafting messages, brainstorming ideas, or planning events - without leaving the Messages app. It will be rolling Gemini in Google Messages in English to start with, on select devices.
