More than 800 users reported issues on outage-tracking website Downdetector around 7 pm IST. Of these, 77% reported problems with the website, while 14% faced issues with the app and 9% with login. In the US, more than 2,800 users reported problems around the same time.
GitHub has been providing hourly updates on the outage. On social media platform X, the company said it was experiencing degraded performance across API requests, Git operations, Actions and other services.
As of 9:46 pm, GitHub said, “We are experiencing high error rates around 20% for web experiences and api traffic. Archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing an approximate 50% error rate. SAML and OIDC authentication, SCIM, and Team Sync are also impacted. We are still working to identify the root cause and will continue to post updates as we learn more and perform mitigation.”
The outage comes just a few months after GitHub confirmed a cyberattack involving unauthorised access to some of its internal repositories, following claims by a threat actor that it had stolen and was attempting to sell company data online.
GitHub said its assessment found that internal repositories had been exfiltrated. The company added that claims of access to nearly 3,800 repositories were broadly consistent with its investigation.
