Former OpenAI cofounder launches new AI company

Ilya Sutskever, one of the cofounders of AI company OpenAI, has launched a new firm called Safe Superintelligence Inc (SSI), just a month after leaving the ChatGPT maker. Sutskever, along with Jan Leike, who co-led OpenAI’s ‘Superalignment’ team, left the Sam Altman-run company in May last year after a fall-out with the leadership at OpenAI.

Leike now heads a team at rival AI company Anthropic, in which tech giants Google and Amazon have made investments. In a post on X social media platform, Sutskever said that “SSI is our mission, our name,
and our entire product roadmap, because it is our sole focus.”


“We plan to advance capabilities as fast as possible while making sure our safety always remains ahead. This way, we can scale in peace,” read the post.

Nvidia becomes world’s most valuable company

Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company, dethroning tech heavyweight Microsoft as its high-end processors play a central role in a scramble to dominate artificial intelligence technology.

The company’s market cap touched $3.335 trillion, just days after overtaking iPhone maker Apple to become the second most valuable company. Nvidia has also become by far the most traded company on Wall Street, with daily turnover recently averaging $50 billion, compared to around $10 billion each for Apple,
Microsoft and Tesla, according to LSEG data.

Apple suspends Vision Pro 2 development

Tech giant Apple has reportedly decided to suspend the development of its high-end augmented reality headset, the Vision Pro 2, in favour of prioritising a more affordable model slated for release in late 2025.

Initially rumoured to launch no earlier than August 2025, now indicate that Apple has reduced the workforce dedicated to the Vision Pro 2 project and informed suppliers of the suspension of its development. This decision underscores Apple’s strategic pivot towards a more accessible AR headset option.

US Surgeon General calls for social media warning

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for a warning label to be added to social media apps as a reminder that those platforms have caused harm to young people, especially adolescents.

Murthy wrote in the New York Times that a warning label alone will not make social media safe for young people but that it can increase awareness and change behaviour as shown in evidence from tobacco studies. The US Congress would need to pass legislation requiring such a label.

A 2019 American Medical Association study showed that the risk of depression doubled for teens who spent three hours a day on social media.
