ETtech Explainer: What the Tata Electronics hack exposed about Apple and Tesla

Earlier this week, Tata Electronics confirmed it had detected a recent "cybersecurity incident" after researchers found that ransomware group World Leaks had published what it claimed were confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla.
According to the World Leaks website, the group has uploaded more than 200,000 files totalling over 630 gigabytes. The leaked material reportedly contains detailed information on hundreds of components expected to be used in Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.
What the hackers leaked
The documents reportedly include detailed component lists, supplier information and photographs linked to Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models.
According to Reuters, documents connected to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Qualcomm, both key Apple suppliers, were also part of the leak.
The report said Apple considers supplier information for unreleased products to be highly confidential. The leaked files reportedly identify suppliers that the company does not publicly disclose.
The documents also reveal where Apple sources the same component from multiple suppliers and where it depends on only a handful of manufacturers, potentially exposing both its negotiating leverage and supply chain vulnerabilities.
Another folder contains photographs showing iPhones undergoing drop tests at a Tata facility in early 2026. The images feature a grey handset with Apple's logo and a triple rear camera setup.

The breach was not limited to Apple.
Industry sources said Tata Electronics also manufactures components for Tesla, and documents linked to the electric vehicle maker were included in the leak.
One folder on the World Leaks website was titled "NV36 Chargeport Controller - North America", apparently referring to parts used in an updated version of Tesla's Model Y.
Another document from 2023, marked "TRADE SECRET", reportedly contained engineering drawings related to Project Highland, Tesla's internal codename for the refreshed Model 3 sedan.
Why it matters
Tata Electronics has become one of Apple's most important manufacturing partners outside China, playing a central role in the company's efforts to diversify production.
The company currently produces around one-third of Apple's iPhones manufactured in India, with Foxconn making the rest.
The leak could expose details of Apple's tightly guarded supplier network and manufacturing strategy, potentially giving competitors, counterfeiters and even suppliers greater visibility into how the company sources critical components.
Another setback
The incident adds to a series of challenges for Apple's India supply chain.
Tata Electronics is already facing scrutiny over alleged contamination of farmland near one of its iPhone component plants.
Last year, Tata's British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover was also hit by a cyberattack that disrupted production for around six weeks.
