‘Dad, the internet at home is too slow’: How Jio’s founding idea took shape
Isha Ambani's concerns regarding poor household internet sparked important conversations about India's digital landscape, leading to transformative innovations. In response, Mukesh Ambani pioneered Reliance Jio in 2011, aiming to enhance mobile co...

Speaking in London in March 2018 after receiving the FT-ArcelorMittal Boldness in Business award, Ambani recalled that Isha, home from Yale, needed to submit her coursework but struggled with the household internet connection. The incident prompted a broader family conversation about India’s digital future.
According to a Business Standard report quoting PTI1, Isha’s complaint led Akash Ambani to point out that telecom was moving beyond voice towards data and internet-led services. Mukesh Ambani has said the exchange became the starting point for what later became Reliance Jio.
The group began developing the business in 2011, when mobile internet usage in India was still constrained by network quality, data costs, and limited smartphone adoption. Jio eventually launched in September 2016 as India’s first major 4G LTE-only network, according to Business Standard2.
Its entry reshaped India’s telecom landscape. The company’s initial free voice and low-cost data strategy accelerated data adoption, pushed rivals to consolidate and helped move mobile connectivity from a premium service to a mass-market utility.
The business has since expanded beyond connectivity into digital services, entertainment, commerce and financial offerings. Akash Ambani, who was closely involved with Jio’s early development, became chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in June 2022.
The scale of the company today is a significant distance from the original household frustration. Reliance Jio serves 533.3 million customers, said Akash Ambani, speaking at the Jio Platforms IPO press conference.
What began as a conversation about a slow home internet connection has since evolved into one of India’s largest digital infrastructure and consumer technology businesses.
