Budget 2025: Gig workers to get identity cards, healthcare by govt

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Union Budget 2025, said India's gig workers will get health insurance under the government's Jan Arogya scheme, and will be given identity cards.

"Gig workers provide great dynamism to the new-age economy. The government will arrange for gig workers' identity cards and registration. Gig workers will get health care under PM Jan Arogya Yojana. Measures will be taken to help over one crore gig workers," Sitharaman said while presenting the Union Budget on Saturday.

The quick commerce sector in the country has seen massive expansion over the past year and 10-minute grocery delivery firms such as Zomato-owned Blinkit, Lightspeed-backed Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have employed thousands of gig workers to manage dark stores and make deliveries.
