Apple has stopped supporting its video-editing app, Clips. The app has now been removed from the App Store, and Apple has confirmed it will no longer release any updates for Clips.

What is Clips?

Launched in 2017, Clips was a simple video editing tool designed for the iPhone and iPad. It lets users combine videos and photos with music, filters, text, and emojis. While it wasn’t a social media platform in itself, it worked in a similar way to apps such as Snapchat and Instagram Stories, helping people make short videos to share.

What happens now?

Apple says the app is no longer available for new users to download as of October 10. However, anyone who has already installed it can keep using it on their current device, as long as it runs a compatible version of iOS or iPadOS. If someone has used Clips before, they can still re-download it through their Apple account.

Apple has also provided guidance on how users can save their existing videos or export clips to the Photos app or other storage options.

Why is it being shut down?

Although Apple added a few features after launching Clips, most updates in recent years were only small bug fixes.

The decision to wind down the app hasn’t come as a shock to many users. On Reddit, some said they had never heard of the app, while others admitted they only tried it once, years ago.

With the rise of more advanced video tools, including OpenAI’s generative AI app Sora, apps such as Clips may quickly become obsolete.
