Zippr ties up with NDMC to create digital door numbers for 50,000 homes

The unique digital door numbers, or DDNs, are aimed at improving door-to-door collection of solid waste. NDMC has installed a smart board with QR code outside houses to this end.

Pune: Location intelligence firm Zippr has collaborated with New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to create unique digital door numbers for more than 50,000 houses in the national capital to help improve door-to-door collection of solid waste.

Rather than following the traditional address format, Zippr creates a unique identity number for homes, streets and localities.

“90% of the administrative tasks happen along the street, so it is important to give identity to all the streets,” said Parikshith Reddy, co-founder of Zippr. “This is a scalable system, down to the localities and buildings.”

For the NDMC project, the multi-utility solution was used to create digital door numbers (DDN) for homes and the corporation installed a smart board with QR code outside the houses. Sanitary workers scan the QR code after collecting waste and the host computer of the app immediately updates the data on waste collection, enabling effective monitoring of the system.

“The government is an important stakeholder so we realised that we need to work with them to fix the problem of both identity and accessibility,” Reddy said. Having a clear identity for all buildings would help plug leaks in the systems and help in improving civic services, he said.

Zippr is working with state governments and local authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well, and is in talks with other civic bodies to take this solution to them.

DDS is also available as a commercial off-the-shelf product that can be used to create unique IDs. Reddy said this had already been deployed for over 4.5 million houses in India.

Some of the government properties where DDN has been implemented include Vigyan Bhavan, Transport Bhawan, the Reserve Bank of India, Akashwani Bhawan, Ministry of Home Affairs, DAK Bhawan, and Shastri Bhawan.
