Snapchat locked US President Donald Trump’s account after his supporters effected a US Capitol siege on Wednesday, a Snap spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch.

The company said it is monitoring the situation closely and will re-evaluate its decision.

The move comes hours after Facebook, Instagram and Twitter banned Trump’s account after he shared a video in which he asks rioters to “go home” before adding, ““We love you. You’re very special.”

Twitter said it required the removal of three tweets for "severe violations of our civic integrity policy". Facebook said, "We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence."

Youtube also removed the video.

He will regain access to his Facebook account 24 hours after the ban and to his Twitter account 12 hours after he deletes his tweet.

Trump has earned the ire of social media firms after his repeated refusals to accept the 2020 US election results and peddling false information and conspiracy theories.

In June Snap announced content from Trump’s Snapchat would no longer be promoted in its Discover tab, and only users who subscribe to or search for it could view it.

Snap’s co-founder and chief executive officer Evan Spiegel said that Snapchat “simply cannot promote accounts in America that are linked to people who incite racial violence, whether they do so on or off our platform.”
