Photo messaging app Snapchat has introduced storage plans for users who save more than 5GB of photos and videos in Memories. Memories, where users save snaps and videos, was launched in 2016. Since then, users have saved over one trillion Memories, the company said in a blog post.

"For the vast majority of Snapchatters, who have less than 5GB of Memories, nothing will change. For Snapchatters with more than 5GB of Memories, meaning thousands of Snaps, we are rolling out new options to upgrade and increase storage. The introductory Memories Storage Plans offer 100GB, 250GB with Snapchat+, or 5TB with Snapchat Platinum," the company said in a release.

Snapchat will provide 12 months of temporary storage for Memories that exceed the 5GB free limit, giving users time to decide whether to upgrade. Users can also download their Memories directly to their devices.

"It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost," the company said.

The app, which has been seeing rising engagement from Gen Z users, is doubling down on the young demographic, especially in markets like India, where the total time spent on the platform has doubled over the past two years.

“India has been at the centre of our global creator strategy, not just because it’s one of our fastest-growing markets, but also because it’s one of the biggest contributors to content on Snapchat,” said Saket Jha Saurabh, director and head, content and augmented reality partnerships, Snap Inc.
