PM Modi welcomes launch of Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed Google's move to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam, saying it will boost India's digital economy and secure its place as a global technology leader.

"This multi-faceted investment that includes gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure, aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat. It will be a powerful force in democratizing technology," PM Modi said in a post on X.



This comes hours after Google announced that it will establish an AI hub in collaboration with AdaniConneX, a hyperscale data services provider. The project involves a total investment of around $15 billion over five years, 2026 to 2030.

Airtel and Google will set up a data centre in Visakhapatnam along with a "state-of-the-art cable landing station (CLS)." The CLS will host Google’s new international subsea cables, expanding its global digital infrastructure.

ET reported on October 8 about the tech giant's plans to invest close to $10 billion to establish a data centre cluster of 1 GW capacity in Visakhapatnam.

Google and its subsidiaries currently operate data centres in 11 countries: US, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Belgium, and Chile, spread across 29 sites. The data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam may be Asia’s largest till date.
