Bengaluru employee union alleges Byju's forcing resignations; company denies claims

A union of IT employees in Bengaluru has accused Byju’s of making its employees “forcefully resign” as part of a “massive retrenchment” days after the edtech unicorn came under fire in Kerala for forcing some of its employees to resign. The company has denied any forceful resignations.

In a notification to its members, Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) alleged that Byju’s is indulging in “unfair labour practices” and urged the company’s management to “respect the law of the land and reinstate all retrenched employees” with immediate effect.

A Byju’s spokesperson, however, said, “It is absolutely false that Byju’s is forcing employees to resign. Byju’s is a responsible organisation and follows all law of the land.”


The company had announced rationalisation of around 5% of its 50,000-strong workforce as part of its plan “to grow profitably and sustainably”.

“Each of the employees who are affected by the restructuring is being informed individually with the empathy that they deserve and need at this time,” the company spokesperson said. “Byju’s is providing all of them a progressive exit package, including extended family health insurance benefits, outplacement services led by some of the industry’s best recruitment specialists, fast-track full-and-final settlement on demand, and the provision of ‘garden leave’ where they can look for jobs while on Byju’s payroll,” the person added.

Last week, following allegations that Byju’s is closing its Technopark office in Thiruvananthapuram and forcing its employees to resign, the Kerala government launched an investigation into Byju’s labour practices.
