Wipro wins $100 mn deal from Saudi Airlines
Software major Wipro has won a five-year 100-million-dollar contract from Saudi Arabian Airlines.
Wipro Arabia, a venture between the Bangalore-based firm and the Dar Al Riyadh group, signed the deal that aims to overhaul the carrier's information-technology infrastructure, Wipro said.
The IT platform will be the bedrock "driving all operations and business transformation" at the airline, it said.
Indian software makers such as Wipro, Infosys and Tata Consultancy are trying to win more business in regions such as the Middle East to reduce dependence on a US market that provides two-thirds of their revenue.
A more than 12 per cent appreciation in the value of the rupee against the dollar last year dented the exports of software makers by reducing the local equivalent of every greenback they earned.
The contract from Saudi Arabian Airlines is the first major deal announced this year by Wipro, which last week posted a 12 percent increase in net profit to 8.54 billion rupees (218.13 million dollars) for the three months ended December.
