Wipro sees new thrust area in ecological solutions
Wipro will be coming out with products and solutions in the area of renewable energy, water, CFL lighting and green IT to name a few.

BANGALORE: Ecological solutions have emerged as the new thrust area for India���s second largest IT company, Wipro, as it looks at building a sustainable business enterprise around this segment. Wipro will be coming out with products and solutions in the area of renewable energy, water, CFL lighting and green IT to name a few.
Wipro has got around 60 ongoing projects through which it seeks to expand its ecological footprint by reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of recycled water and building energy-efficient buildings. ���Ecological and social sustainability will be the defining issues for all of us in future,��� said Anurag Behar, corporate VP, social and community initiatives, Wipro.
A step in this direction has been the signing of an MoU between Wipro and WWF to collaborate in several areas of sustainability with focus on the application of IT solutions for ecological sustainability . This programme is in its initial stage and is expected to gain momentum in mid-2009.
Some of Wipro���s ecological solutions , for example, in the area of renewable energy, would see it providing consulting and system integration services across the spectrum. In the area of water recycling, it will provide water solutions and energy-efficient industrial lighting solutions. This would see Wipro leverage its inherent expertise in IT in providing these solutions and come out with new products.
Mr Behar said Wipro would not only be measuring itself through the profitability or business index but also from the ecological and social sustainability point of view. He said it would be leveraging its existing chain of suppliers to grow the eco-system of ecological solutions. Though he did not divulge any internal targets for such a business, Wipro expects to grow it into a substantial one.
