Wipro agrees to take 50 acre land in Kolkata

The West Bengal government on Friday said software major Wipro has agreed to take 50 acres of land at Rajarhat to set up a facility.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Friday said software major Wipro has agreed to take 50 acres of land at Rajarhat to set up a facility, nearly two months after the state shelved its IT township project.

"It is really good news for West Bengal that Wipro has formally communicated willingness to take land at New Town in Rajarhat," state IT Minister Debesh Das said on Friday.

Officials of Wiporo met the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Managing Director and submitted a request for 50 acre at a concessional price, he added.

Wipro and IT behemoth Infosys had earlier announced their plans to set up facilities in the state and were promised land by the state government at cheaper rates.

However, their plans came to a naught after the ambitious IT township project near luxury resort Vedic Village was scrapped early September following allegations of irregularities in land allocation.

However, Das said land price for the present site for Wipro was yet to be determined. Infosys is yet to revert to the state, officials added.
