UIDAI to appoint consultants to draft RFPs: Nandan Nilekani

UIDAI is likely to appoint consultants to help it draft the RFP (request for proposals) for managed service providers over the next few weeks, its Chairman, Nandan Nilekani, said.

MUMBAI: Unique Identification Development Authority (UIDAI) is likely to appoint consultants to help it draft the RFP (request for proposals) for managed service providers over the next few weeks, its Chairman, Nandan Nilekani, said.

"We will appoint consultants to help us draft the RFP for our managed service providers," Nilekani told reporters on the sidelines of the Nasscom event here today.

The Authority has already floated RFP for application service development and a decision on the same will be taken in the next couple of weeks, he said.

"The road-map is very clear. In the next few weeks, we are going to appoint consultants to help us draft the RFP for our managed service providers. We have also floated an RFP for application services development...we hope to decide on that also in the next few weeks," he said.

The Authority will undertake a number of pilot projects and "proof of concept to check out the technology and how it works," he said.

Responding to a question whether the cards will be issued under the IT Act, Nilekani said "the mode of the project is to come up under the UIDAI Act--this will be one more track which will be there. This will be to frame the legislation which will be there," he said.

Nilekani said the project was very much on track and the first set of numbers would be rolled-out between August 2010-February 2011.

When asked whether NRIs would also be eligible, he said "anyone who meets the standard laid down (by the Authority) is eligible to get the card."

Asked how much business the project would generate for the IT industry, Nilekani said that the Authority would be doing three-four things.

"From our side we will be doing 3-4 things--appointment of a consultant to help us draft the RFP, getting the applications developed by outsourcing and appointing a managed services provider," he said.
