TN CM makes deal with Infosys

Infosys will invest Rs 1,250 crore and create 25,000 jobs within the next three to four years.

BANGALORE: Newly-elected Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi couldn’t have timed his visit to Bangalore any better. Even as the city continues to grapple with traffic congestion and commuting problems, Karunanidhi visited Infosys and assured it of better facilities in Chennai. And Infosys responded with a commitment to invest Rs 1,250 crore and a promise to create 25,000 jobs within the next three to four years.

Incidentally, Infosys already has its largest campus coming up at the Mahindra City in Chennai which is spread over 125 acres.

“We have told the Tamil Nadu government that we will have 25,000 jobs in Mahindra City in the next three to four years. We already have about 3,500 people working there. This year, we will hire 5,000 people more,” said T V Mohandas Pai, director , HR, administration, research and education, Infosys Technologies .

Pai added that the company had promised to invest Rs 1,250 crore to expand its Chennai operations.

“We will have invested Rs 350 crore in Chennai by the end of this year,” he said. Tamil Nadu is evaluating the feasibility of setting up an IT park in Hosur, some 40 km from Bangalore .

Karunanidhi was accompanied by Union telecom and IT minister Dayanidhi Maran, the state’s industry secretary Shaktikant and IT secretary C Chandramouli. The team also visited Wipro to hold discussions with top officials.

According to Maran, the chief minister, who also holds the IT portfolio, was in Bangalore to personally look at the way both the companies, “have changed Bangalore” , besides requesting them to invest more in Tamil Nadu and also look at tier-II cities like Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Tirunelveli.
