Thiagaraja College of Engineering signs agreement with Yahoo

Yahoo!India Research and Development has signed a three-year research agreement with Thiagaraja College of Engineering (TCE) here for undertaking research in the area of "Cloud Computing".

MADURAI: Yahoo!India Research and Development has signed a three-year research agreement with Thiagaraja College of Engineering (TCE) here for undertaking research in the area of "Cloud Computing".

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Director of Yahoo!India R&D, Chidambaram Kollengode, said research in the field of cloud computing required a lot of brain power and the agreement was signed after considering the talents as well as infrastructure facilities available in the college.

The special groups formed by the college would help Yahoo to continue its research acitivies, even if students leaves the college, he said.

TCE was already having research tie-ups with Honewell and Hewlet Packard.

"Yahoo was impressed with the research infrastructure already available in the college and was willing to provide more hardware facilities to enlarge the scale of research", Chidambaram said.

"After Parallel Computing and Distributing Computing, now the research was in the field of cloud computing, which was an advanced field", Abhayakumar, principal of the college said

Yahoo, a major user of cloud computing technology, was already operating 'multipole cloud computing clusters. Cloud computing is a new concept', Chidambaram said.

It would help to optimise performance of computers. The research agreement was also aimed at establishing a "Centre of Excellence in Cloud computing" in the college to foster active research in this emerging field of technology, he said.

Cloud computing infrastructure would be developed at TCE to address the needs of academic institutions.

"Computational resources for teaching faculty, students and researchers required flexibility in order to be effective in diverse environments". The infrastructure would be enabled in an affordable manner, he said.

Chidambaram said the new initiative would help TCE to conduct practical research in cloud computing secenario. It also enlarged the opportunity for students and faculty to experiment with cloud computing and thus add to society's innovation in this high impact area.
