MUMBAI: The Indian software industry lost its biggest champion as Sunil Mehta of Nasscom died of possible cardiac arrest early on Saturday in Mumbai. He was 41, and is survived by his wife Shivani Mehta and two daughters.

Sunil Mehta was never the face of the industry, he was more the ‘keeper of its interest’ globally.

The Indian software industry has successfully grabbed global customers attracting backlash from governments, unions and media across the world.

Sunil Mehta’s job was to protect the interest of the industry. It was his job to push the Indian government at bilateral and global forums, the agenda of the Indian software industry.

Sunil’s love for numbers and data was well known, he had even created a company around it called INFAC in the early 80’s. He created INFAC and sold it to Crisil.

Though, he was an entrepreneur at heart and could have started another business, he chose to give up that path to promote software industry agenda. He was part of Nasscom’s think-thank.
