Betting on network computing to drive the future growth of the industry, Sun Microsystems chairman Scott McNealy vowed that this would be the most efficient model.

BANGALORE: Betting on network computing to drive the future growth of the industry, Sun Microsystems chairman Scott McNealy vowed that this would be the most efficient model.

“Being on the network is the most reliable, low cost unlike any other proprietary software,” he said, addressing mediapersons here on Friday.Sun Microsystems has made available most of its software and systems free on the internet and has promised that it would continue to do so.

“Source code has become a technical weapon,” Mr McNealy said, in an obvious reference to Microsoft. However, he added that both proprietary and open source systems would co-exist. The Sun chairman who is on his second visit to India said the country has been its fastest growing non-US engineering site with around 1,500 people. He said the Indian market has been one of its high growth areas.

It is expecting four sectors — government, telecom, BFSI and internet service providers to power its growth.and looking at providing the technology infrastructure.However, Mr McNealy said he was not looking at India as source of cheaper labour but making as much technology available, adding, “we believe in innovation and sharing.”He claimed that there has already been over 3 lakh downloads of its solaris operating system.
