Qualcomm ties up with IIT-M

Qualcomm, wireless chip developer, has established a chair in wireless technology at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.


CHENNAI: Qualcomm, wireless chip developer, has established a chair in wireless technology at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. This is the first academic donation by Qualcomm in India and is endowed by a grant of $175,000, the company said.

Kanwalinder Singh, president, Qualcomm (India) and Saarc told reporters in Chennai on Wednesday the establishment of a chair at the premier educational institution would help in tapping a whole suite of opportunities to innovate in the next generation interfaces.

Prof MS Ananth, Director, IIT Madras, said the institute was already into research in wireless technology. The chair would help in ‘a meeting of unlike minds’, and enhance the quality of research. About 40% of the institute’s revenues came from sponsored research and consulting, he added.

Earlier, IIT Madras was involved in the development of CorDect, Wireless Local in Loop Technology along with Midas Communication. The technology is being used to connect rural areas both in India and abroad.

The institute’s electronics department officials said the grant would help in its research into development of fourth generation communication technology.
