No place for unions in IT: Infosys chief

Kris Gopalakrishnan, who took over as the CEO of Infosys late last month, said that it may not be the right time for the formation of trade unions in the IT sector.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kris Gopalakrishnan, who took over as the CEO of Infosys late last month, said that it may not be the right time for the formation of trade unions in the IT sector. “The IT sector pays well. Why should there be trade unions without any significant reason for it,” he asked, pointing out that even though trade unions might not harm the industry, there was the issue of the image it creates.

Speaking at meet-the-press here on Monday, Mr Gopalakrishnan suggested that there be constructive dialogue so that there would be no need for any apprehensions between companies and staffers. Supporting his argument that unions were quite out of place at the moment, he pointed out that the attrition rate in BPOs was as high as 40% and that even in the mainline IT sector, the attrition rate was 15-17%.

On the issue of minimum alternate tax, he said his personal opinion was that companies should pay taxes, adding that he agreed with his colleague, Mr Narayanamurthy, who supported the idea of paying tax and that if there was a tax holiday, then corporates should benefit from it.

Referring to the company’s operations in Kerala, Mr Gopalakrishnan said Infosys had 1,100 staffers in the state.
