New era in product development
Welcome to the virtual world of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) that is increasingly finding many takers in India.
Welcome to the virtual world of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) that is increasingly finding many takers in India. While Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Eicher and Ashok Leyland are using PLM to conceptualise, manufacture and test automobiles, FMCG majors such as HLL are deploying it for simpler tasks like designing of diapers.
Unlike CAD or CAM, which partly help in the production process, PLM takes care of everything right from conceptualising to commercial production, eliminating all the physical processes involved.
The advantages of this virtual design and product development are huge cost savings and quality that lives up to expectations.
Like their global peers, auto majors in India are using PLM in a big way. Nearly 30% of passenger cars in India are being built with the use of PLM technology, while more than 50% of three-wheelers and commercial vehicles are developed with this technology, according to Kamal Kumar, managing director of the Bangalore-based Dassault Systems, a company that provides PLM solutions. And over 40% of two-wheelers are developed with this technology.
Apart from major cut in production costs (over 30% on the average), PLM technology saves time too, said Mr Kumar.
This technology also saves on manpower and tooling costs that have a meaty role in heavy engineering activities like building of aircraft.
The market of PLM technology world-wide is pegged at $11.2bn annually, growing at a double digit rate. India is also high on the use of this technology. “India can become a hub of smart manufacturing using PLM technology. It has both the companies that can put resources into this technology and the hi-tech manpower that is required to operate it,”
said Mr Kumar.
Dassault Systems, which generates over $22m annually from India through sale of PLM technology, is targeting revenue of about $100m in the next three years.
