Nasscom seeks changes in SEZ Act

Nasscom, the apex body for IT software companies has sought changes in the SEZ Act for the benefit of small firms which constitute a significant number in the industry.

KOLKATA: Nasscom, the apex body for IT software companies has sought changes in the SEZ Act for the benefit of small firms which constitute a significant number in the industry.

Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said that the stipulation of a minimum of 25 acres or 100 acres for setting up a SEZ has put small IT software companies at a disadvantage.

Karnik said the Indian software industry thrived on small companies, adding that these firms had to pay large amounts for acquiring space in the SEZs. This in turn would hamper exports, he said.

The Nasscom president said the other alternative was to continue with the existing Software Technology Parks (STP) Act which would remain valid till 2009.

He said that STP had worked well in the Indian context, for which the government could also consider continuation with this provision.

Karnik said that Nasscom would take up the issue with the government.

Asked about the response of the IT Ministry, he said that Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran were very supportive of it.

However, the Finance Ministry has to decide on it since there were issues related to revenues.
