In recent times, the Tata group has been putting younger faces at the helm in its various companies. A trend started with N Srinath, who took over as MD of VSNL (now Tata Communications) at the age of 45 in 2007. For the Tatas, 40s seems to be the new 60s. Traditionally, the Tata group's CEOs were greying gentlemen. But now young talent is increasingly being encouraged in the over century-old group.
Another case in point is 40-year-old Mukund Rajan, who took charge of Tata Teleservices in February 2008. Forty two-year-old R Mukundan, also found a place in this enviable list of honchos as head of Tata Chemicals in December 2008.
For Chandrasekaran, taking a $ 6 billion company with over 1.40 lakh employees to the next level of growth, will present a new set of challenges. The Indian outsourcing sector had been going through a difficult phase, following the global economic slowdown last year.
Says Chandrasekaran, Coming out of the global economic downturn, the technology market worldwide holds tremendous potential for TCS. TCS has about 1% market share of the global technology services spend. There is substantial headroom for us to significantly increase this.'' He adds that he has taken over at a time when Ramadorai has ensured a strong position for TCS in the global IT services space. With our strong customer base, full services offering, multi-domain capability and presence across emerging markets, I believe that we are optimally positioned to take advantage of the opportunity in the international market.''
