McAfee's new application to help users protect photos on Facebook

NEW DELHI: Security solutions provider McAfee today launched a new free application 'McAfee Social Protection' to help users protect their photos from being shared without their permission on social networking site Facebook.

Offered as a Facebook app together with a browser plug-in, the app lets users select which friends have access to their photos and makes pictures appear blurry to everyone else, McAfee said in a statement.

For selected friends, the photos will be displayed properly once those friends have installed the app, creating a second layer of protection, it added.

Also friends, who have been granted access to view photos, will not be able to share, copy, print or take screenshots of them.

"As consumers continue to share more of their lives online through the photos they post to Facebook, they become increasingly vulnerable to the privacy pitfalls associated with not being able to fully control where their photos end up," McAfee Senior Vice-President (Consumer Product Management) Brian Foster said.

The app helps to further underscore McAfee's commitment to safeguarding consumer's safety, data and identities online, he added.

As a collaboration between Intel and McAfee, the app was developed by Intel's Software and Services Group, it said.
