Mastek bags electronic toll collection project

Maharashtra government appoints Mastek Ltd to develop electronic toll collection system on some of the Mumbai's busiest routes.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Government is planning to launch an electronic toll collection system on some of the Mumbai's busiest routes and has appointed IT company Mastek Ltd to develop the system.

The electronic toll collection system would bring in additional revenues to the government and discourage private vehicle owners from entering busy streets in the city.

With 600 new vehicles registering in Mumbai daily, the city's infrastructure is under pressure.

The money raised through electronic toll collection could be used for improving the city's infrastructure, Mastek Chief Capability Officer Dinesh Maheshwary said.

The state government would need around Rs 2.50 lakh crore to improve the city's infrastructure.

Mumbai-headquartered Mastek has earlier worked on the electronic toll collection in London. "The London project was a multi-million dollar one. The costs for it in Mumbai have not been decided," Maheshwary said.

Once the electronic toll collection system is in place, people entering specified areas would have to pay the toll fare else they could face a fine.

"This system would not be done in the form of a toll and booth model," Maheshwary said.

A few cameras would be put at various places to capture the vehicle numbers, which would be cross-checked with the database of people who have paid for using the roads.
