Maharashtra government bans Uber, Ola taxi services

The ban comes after the Delhi rape incident where a female passenger who availed of Uber's service alleged that she was raped by the driver.

Maharashtra government has banned Uber and Ola and any web based taxi service in the state, the ban would be 'effective immediately'. The move comes after the Transport department received directions from the centre to ban all web based taxi service.

Transport Secretary SK Sharma said following the centre's 'advise' that arrived yesterday at their department, they have now taken a decision to ban all web based application services. " We have asked authorities to immediately stop Uber and Ola's services." said Sharma to Economic Times.

When asked as to when the ban would be effective, Sharma replied, " IT is effectively immediately."

The ban comes after the Delhi rape incident where a female passenger who availed of Uber's service alleged that she was raped by the driver.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh then gave a statement in the Rajya Sabha that it has 'advised all state governments/UT administrations to ensure that the operations of the web-based taxi services are stopped."
