Karnataka tops country's IT exports

Karnataka has occupied the top slot among states with a share of around 37 per cent in the country's IT exports during 2005-06, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) said.

NEW DELHI: Karnataka has occupied the top slot among states with a share of around 37 per cent in the country's IT exports during 2005-06, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) said.

The southern state had exported software services worth Rs 37,000 crore, out of the total Rs 1,00,965 crore exports from the country, registering a growth of 34 per cent over the previous year, ESC Chairman Nalin Kohli said in a release here.

According to an ESC analysis, many states have done well in software exports with growth rate varying between 16 per cent to 67 per cent.

Maharashtra, with an increase of 36 per cent in exports at Rs 15,500 crore, occupies the second slot in the list, riding on the back of impressive performance by IT firms in Aurangabad, Kohlapur, Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur and Nasik.

In percentage terms, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh have registered impressive growth. While Kerala clocked a growth of 67 per cent, with IT exports increasing from Rs 270 crore to Rs 452 crore in 2005-06, Himachal's exports grew from a mere Rs 60 lakh to Rs one crore during the period in review.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh occupy the third and fourth slots in the list with a growth rate of 29 per cent and 51 per cent over the previous year, ESC said.
