Japan nuclear crisis: L&T Infotech charters plane to bring back Japan staff
The company has contracted Kingfisher to operate a special flight on Thursday from Tokyo's Narita airport to Chennai to evacuate the employees for a temporary period.

MUMBAI: L&T Infotech, a unit of engineering major Larsen & Toubro, said on Wednesday it would bring back all 185 expatriate staff and their families from Japan.
The company has contracted Kingfisher Airlines to operate a special flight on Thursday from Tokyo's Narita airport to Chennai to evacuate the employees for a temporary period, it said. Japanese employees of the company have decided to stay back.
Sudip Banerjee, CEO, L&T Infotech, said: "We have called back everyone except 3-4 office staff who are Japanese and hour Head of the Operations there, Vice President staying back. We are calling back rest of staff."
The Japanese market accounts for 2% of L&T Infotech's revenues. Banerjee said, "At this point of time the revenue is irrelevant given the current situation. Our employees are not in a comfortable state. There seems to be more radiation coming through. Hence, we have decided that it is unsafe and therefore we have chartered a plane and decided to bring them back."
Workers in Japan were ordered to withdraw briefly from a stricken nuclear power plant on Wednesday after radiation levels surged, a development that suggested the crisis was spiralling out of control.
"We would not send our employees back until it is completely safe for them from a health point of view but what we have done is that we have had discussions with our customers. We will be doing much of the work from here. So all the critical work that we are doing will be continued from our India centres," added Banerjee.
Scores of flights to Japan have been halted or rerouted, air travellers are avoiding Tokyo for fear of radiation, and on Wednesday France urged its nationals in the city either to leave Japan or head to the country's south.
