Govt invites Microsoft to develop water management project
The government today invited Global IT major, Microsoft for developing e-projects targeted at efficient water management, increased tourism and cultural promotion.

NEW DELHI: The government today invited Global IT major, Microsoft for developing e-projects targeted at efficient water management, increased tourism and cultural promotion.
Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal while speaking at a symposium organised by Microsoft here said the company could partner with the government to work on some projects by making use of the latest computation technology, like maintaining hydrological data of major cities.
"Take Delhi or Mumbai to begin with and develop sensors that can help maintain hydrological data like the amount and flow of water in a particular area or moisture content in the soil," Sibal said.
He said the pilot project could be extended to rest of the country aiming at efficient water management and replenishment.
"If you choose Mumbai to start the project, assure availability of funds even if the state of Maharashtra does not agree," he said.
While, he also suggested creation of a 3D virtual museum on computer covering major cultural and tourist sites in the country with an aim to attract more tourists and benefit the students' community.
"Why not let people around the world see 3D images of Himalayas and get more tourists in the country," he added.
Citing example of the 3D model of Delhi being developed by the government, Sibal said technological innovations if used in a productive manner can help meet certain challenges in areas like agriculture, environment protection and health.
He said the 3D model of the complete city will be ready in one year, which will enable the government to monitor all the landmarks and buildings in Delhi.
