EU slams US criticism of MS ruling

An EU court ruling upholding antitrust sanctions against Microsoft drew a harsh response from the US Justice Department, which said it may stifle the burgeoning technology sector.

BRUSSELS: EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes slammed on Tuesday criticism from the US Justice Department of a European court's recent ruling against Microsoft.

"The European Commission does not pass judgement on rulings by US courts and we expect the same degree of respect from US authorities for rulings by EU courts," she told journalists.

On Monday, Europe's second highest court handed Microsoft a surprise defeat in its epic antitrust battles, backing the European Commission's 2004 record fine of 497 million euros (690 million dollars) on the software giant.
