EMRI board asks Raju family to distance itself from NGO

NEW DELHI: Satyam promoted Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) on Tuesday requested former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to reconsider his resignation and take up the role of Chairman Emeritus of EMRI. It also requested its founder promoters - the Raju family to distance itself from the non-profit venture.

EMRI's board members like former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, ICICI Bank Chairman KV Kamath, CII Chief Mentor Tarun Das, ex-Nasscom President Kiran Karnik and Harvard Business School Professor Krishna Palepu had resigned earlier this month in the wake of the Satyam fiasco.

Interestingly, in view of the current circumstances, and in the interest of the future operations of EMRI, the board requested the members of the Raju family to delink themselves from EMRI.

The board however unanimously acknowledged the initiative of the Raju family which led to creation of EMRI.

The board had its Quarterly Meeting of the Members of the Governing Board. The meeting was attended by Prof. Raj Reddy - Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan - Lok Satta, Mr K Krishnam Raju - Secretary, Indo American Cancer Institute and Mr. Venkat Changavalli - CEO EMRI.

Mr. Rajat Gupta - Chairman ISB Board joined the meeting over telephone as he was overseas. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Raj Reddy.

EMRI handles over 8,200 emergencies per day with 1,539 ambulances in 8 States - Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Assam.
