Bomb scare at Kolkata IT hub

Kolkata’s IT and BPO hub at Salt Lake Electronic Complex (Saltlec) was put on alert following a late evening bomb scare at Wipro’s city BPO unit on Thursday.

KOLKATA: Kolkata’s IT and BPO hub at Salt Lake Electronic Complex (Saltlec) was put on alert following a late evening bomb scare at Wipro’s city BPO unit on Thursday. Though the police couldn’t find any trace of explosives at the Wipro premises, the facility was evacuated for over an hour after the bomb scare.

“A high-level police team was pressed into action along with the bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs at Wipro’s Salt Lake unit. Though we did not find any bomb, the entire area has been put on alert,” said Mr Raj Kanojia, IG (law and order), West Bengal Police.

When contacted, West Bengal IT minister Debesh Das who was in Delhi said: “I just got the news about the bomb scare at Wipro’s Salt Lake facility, although I gather no explosives were found. I have urged the West Bengal Police to step up security in the city’s IT complex.”

Here’s a peek into the chain of events that culminated in the bomb scare. Apparently, around 5 pm, the Wipro BPO office received an anonymous call about a bomb planted in its premises, following which the facility was instantly evacuated.

Subsequently, Wipro activated its business continuity plan which entails mission-critical work handled at Kolkata to be shifted to the company’s other facilities in India. “This was done to prevent any business disruption. But the city facility soon returned to normal,” a Wipro official said from Bangalore.

The Wipro official said the state police was trying to trace the call. “We don’t expect any disruption in our Kolkata operations as Wipro’s business continuity plan has been triggered,” said a senior official at Wipro BPO’s Saltlec unit.
