AMD unveils APUs with facial log-in, gesture recognition

MUMBAI: Chip maker AMD today unveiled its Elite A-Series Accelerated Processing Units ( APUs), which provides features like facial log-in, gesture recognition, enhanced power management capabilities and improved graphics.

Unlike a traditional processor, APUs are designed to accelerate one or more types of computations. This may include graphics or similar specialised processing system.

"AMD today announced the first availability of the AMD Elite A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), codenamed Richland," the company said in a release.

"New, low-voltage and desktop variants of AMD Elite A-Series APUs are expected to be announced and available in the first half of 2013," the NYSE-listed company added.

The new AMD APUs leverages the power of combined compute and graphics cores to accelerate a suite of available software experiences that can dramatically expand and enhance the user experience, it said.

"Our engineers have done a superb job of increasing processor performance while decreasing power consumption," AMD Corporate Vice President and General Manager ( Client Business Unit) Bernd Lienhard said.

With new softwares like gesture control, facial recognition, rich entertainment and lifelike gaming, the 2013 AMD Elite A-Series APUs are delivering an ever richer experience to end users and customers, he added.

World's second largest computer chipmaker, AMD, have developed the new APUs, which provide a combination of faster processing speed, multiple compute cores and graphic capabilities, making it an excellent platform for gamers and PC enthusiasts alike.
