Wipro BPO eyeing large IT deals with Fortune 500 majors

Wipro BPO, the $395-million arm of Wipro Technologies, is eyeing four-five large outsourcing contracts in the $60-$150 million range with Fortune 500 majors in the telecom, healthcare, banking & financial services and retail space.

NEW DELHI: Wipro BPO, the $395-million arm of Wipro Technologies, is eyeing four-five large outsourcing contracts in the $60-$150 million range with Fortune 500 majors in the telecom, healthcare, banking & financial services and retail space.

These are some of the largest contracts that the company has chased in recent times. The company is also opening its second facility at Manila in Philippines in the next 8-12 weeks. This will be in addition to its centre at Subic Bay in the country.

Interestingly, Wipro BPO, which already has most of its employees in India will add more headcount globally than in India. This is to strengthen its global delivery model, to serve customers from multiple locations - in India and outside.

Confirming the development Ashutosh Vaidya, head of Wipro BPO told ET, there are a few large contracts we are chasing. The market is much better now and with our combined IT-BPO offering we expect to sign some large contracts soon. Wipro BPO had in May tied up with Oracle for HR platform solutions and with Hackett Group (a strategic advisory firm) that bolstered its capability in the HR related processes. It is looking at similar partnerships in finance & accounts, procurement, loan and the mortgage space.

There are quite a few contracts up for grabs out there. Some of the large contracts seek both IT and BPO delivery capabilities with deep domain expertise. Companies are tying up with software majors to get expertise in niche areas and hence get access to large contracts, says Viral Thakker, head of sourcing advisory, KPMG.

As far as headcount is concerned, Wipro BPO wants to add headcount more outside than in India. Explaining the rationale, Mr Vaidya says that it will help the company to expand its global delivery capability.

The company is already present in seven locations outside India. Poland, Brazil, China, Australia, Mexico, US and the Philippines are the other locations. In the Philippines it has 1,000 people at Subic Bay and is now starting another centre at Manila with 200 people.
