West Bengal informs Infy, Wipro about non-availability of land

State IT minister will officially inform Infosys and Wipro about the inability to provide land at Rajarhat. TCS mulls multiple COO structure | IT cos free of labour laws

KOLKATA: The West Bengal IT department is likely to officially inform both Infosys and Wipro soon about its inability to provide 90 acres each to them at the proposed IT township near Vedic Village.

State IT minister Debesh Das will draft the letter, which is likely to say that the government perhaps will not be able to offer any alternative land to the IT companies in that area anytime soon since none is available , state government sources told ET on Wednesday.

For the last couple of years, we have been telling Infosys and Wipro that their land allotment is on track, even if it is behind schedule . But the way things have been going on at the IT township project , there is practically no way the project can come up. In such a situation , the government does not want to keep Infosys and Wipro waiting, the source said.

If and when the state IT department is able to identify alternate land, it will again get in touch with both the companies. However, it is unlikely that the department will be able to find such alternate land, at least in the near future, the source added.

We failed with Jagadishpur earlier, and now with the Kolkata Links project biting the dust, we really dont know where to look for land for greenfield IT and BPO projects. The problem is that nearly every reputed IT company or BPO firm wants to be near Kolkata. Ever since Wipro and Infosys inked MoUs, we had received a string of enquiries from companies like ICICI Bank to ITC Infotech. There is no prime land available near Kolkata for IT projects anymore. Salt Lake is saturated and many IT firms feel the Rajarhat land that is allotted by Hidco is too expensive, said an official.

The official said after Hidco did not lower its land price at Rajarhat for Infosys and Wipro, West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) had tried to find alternative land for both the companies. But beyond that, WBIDC did not proceed . It was then the IT department thought of Jagadishpur as a site. But as soon as land acquisition notices were given, trouble erupted in the area and the process got stuck. It was then that Vedic Realty was thought of as a possible partner, he said.
