Spanco bags Orissa data deal

Telecom and IT major Spanco on Wednesday said that it has got a contract from the Orissa government to set up a data centre as part of the e-government initiative.

MUMBAI: Telecom and IT major Spanco on Wednesday said that it has got a contract from the Orissa government to set up a data centre as part of the e-government initiative. Spanco, which beat larger rival TCS in getting the contract, said this would be the first of the 23 similar projects that the government has lined up and is scheduled to be completed within four months.

Although Spanco didnt disclose the financial details of the contract, it has already been mentioned in reports that expenditure on the nation-wide implementation of such projects totals around Rs 1,110 crore. These projects are part of the e-governance initiatives of National eGovernance Plan.

It is a matter of great pride for Spanco to have the first SDC order in the country, said Spanco chairman Kapil Puri.
This is important for Spanco as we now have presence across the entire service delivery infrastructure of the National eGovernance Plan. We have a target for about 5 to 7 SDC projects in the country, he added.

Under the contract, the data centres will consolidate services, applications and infrastructure to deliver government-to-government, consumer and business services.

These services can be offered through common delivery platforms supported by the state wide area network (SWAN) and common service centre (CSC). Spanco has already won a contract to implement SWAN in Maharashtra, while TCS recently got a similar contract from the Andhra Pradesh government.
