BHUBANESWAR: Unhappy over little progress in implementation of various information technology projects in the state, the Orissa government has asked 35 IT companies to start work soon or return land allotted to them for the purpose, official sources said on Friday.
The government's action was a follow up of a recent review meeting chaired by its secretary P K Mohapatra. The meeting reviewed progress made by different companies in setting up IT projects, mostly BPOs.
"We found a number of companies were allotted government land on priority basis for the purpose, but they have not started working on the project," Mohapatra told the media, adding that the land remained unutilised for months together.
Besides, it was also observed though some of the companies had submitted their action plan on land utilisation, they were far from reality. Some other action plan reports were also found to be untrue, sources said.
Mohapatra said while a number of interested companies were finding it difficult to get suitable land for setting up their units, others were found to be sitting on proposals and keeping prime land unutilised.
"Therefore, we have asked them to return the land so that others could utilise them," he said, adding some of the companies had kept land unutilised for more than two years. All of them were allotted land measuring half acre to one acre in size.
