NASSCOM team to meet Obama officials in March

KOLKATA: For all its reassurance that Barack Obamas elevation to the US Presidency wont take away any joy from the outsourcing party, software industry body Nasscom is clearly taking no chances on that front.

A high-profile Nasscom delegation will be travelling to the US in March 2009 to lobby officials of the Obama administration, influencers (Senators et al) and key thinktanks to ensure that no nasty surprises greet Indian tech majors on the outsourcing issue.

While it is unclear at this stage as to who exactly from Nasscom and its membership would travel to the US with this purpose in mind, it is likely that the organisation may press into service some of its most prominent names for this job. Nasscom president Som Mittal, in any case, is a certainty.

On its part, though, Nasscom is reluctant to describe the March 2009 trip as a lobbying mission and sees it more of an ongoing exercise to put things in their proper perspective. We embarked on a similar thing recently in Japan when we interacted with policymakers and key officials, Nasscom president Som Mittal told TOI on Monday. Incidentally, Nasscom had been keeping the lines of communication open with the aides of all the candidates in the fray for the US Presidency for quite some time so that the India viewpoint was understood and kept in mind during the decisionmaking process.

With the US alone accounting for over 60% of Indias software exports, it must be understood that Nasscom does not have much room for manoeuvre on this score. Despite attempts to grow other markets, the US would continue to be Indias largest market for many years to come.

Nasscom has been trying to develop greater links with Japan, Germany, France and Scandinavian countries. It is also trying to identify and resolve the issues that are coming in the way of doing greater business with these countries. The UK is Indias secondbiggest market for software exports.
