'Fresno Bee' to outsource advt production work to India
The Fresno Bee, a California-based daily, has announced that it will outsource some advertising production work to India.
Seven of the 31 workers in the newspaper's advertising design department will lose their jobs, said Ken Hatfield, The Bee's vice president of communications and public affairs.
Beginning in September, the San Jose-based Express KCS, with offices in London and near New Delhi, will take over the work.
"This is a difficult decision for the newspaper to make, but The Fresno Bee needs to operate more efficiently," Hatfield said.
Ray Steele, publisher and president of The Fresno Bee, said in a statement that the move is meant to "serve our advertising customers more effectively, efficiently and economically while focusing on our core business: producing relevant and compelling news and advertising information in our newspaper and on our Web sites."
Advertising customers will continue to interact with Bee sales, marketing and design employees in Fresno, he said.
The move "should be fairly seamless" for The Bee's advertising clients, Hatfield said, adding that the fact that India's workday takes place during California's night time hours could speed up some production processes.
Formed in India, Express KCS began expanding its services to US and British clients in 2004, and in 2006 reformed as a Delaware-registered limited liability corporation, according to the company's Web site.
Express KCS does advertising production work for some other California newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury News, the Contra Costa Times and ANG Newspapers, which publishes the Oakland Tribune and other dailies in Bay Area.
