Consumers can push organisations to become sustainable: Wipro chairman

BENGALURU: Wipro chairman Rishad Premji said the IT services major's clients were putting pressure on it to become more sustainable and consumers across sectors have the power to change organisations.

He was responding to students' questions at the 9th edition of the Wipro earthian awards here.

"I was in a meeting (World Economic Forum) three weeks ago where thousands of companies across the globe participated, and the main conversation was on sustainability," said Premji.


He said the main question Wipro's clients had was also on sustainability. "We work with big companies as Wipro and their number one question was what is your sustainability agenda or plan. They are now putting more pressure on us as a company to do the right thing."

The Wipro chairman said as consumers people should not forget the power they have to push organisations to become more conscious about sustainability.

"That's the path we all have as individuals...We (as users) can have incredible amount of impact on the organisations like Wipro," Premji said.

Wipro earthian is one of India’s largest sustainability education programmes for schools and colleges.

The teams from schools demonstrated their understanding of biodiversity, waste and water through a combination of activity-based learning programs and written essays.

The winning institutes at the Wipro earthian award were awarded a certificate and cash prize. They will also get an opportunity to engage with Wipro and its expert sustainability partners through continuous collaborative programs that will enable a deeper understanding of issues critical to sustainability, said the company.
