NEW DELHI: The Centre has asked states to expedite computerisation of Road Transport Offices (RTOs). It has pulled up state governments for the slow progress in computerisation and asked them to put up all records on computer.
TR Baalu, union minister of road transport, urged states to gear up to facilitate the transfer process of vehicles moving from one state to another. The minister said that his ministry has received several complaints regarding non-refund of one-time tax paid in a state in case of transfer of vehicle to another state.
At a FICCI conference on auto retail, Mr Baalu said that the ministry will examine the concerns raised by automobile dealers over registration and re-registration of motor vehicles in the country before taking a decision.
He also asked automobile companies to modernise their vehicles by installing GPS technology which would make it easier to track vehicles in case of road accidents. Mr Baalu urged motor companies to provide maximum safety features in vehicles, such as air bags, anti-collision devices, fatigue alarms and effective anti-lock braking systems. Further, Mr Baalu expressed concern over advertisements glamorising over-speeding, and cautioned them to emphasise on safety norms to spread road safety awareness.
He pointed out that over 92,000 persons were killed in more than four lakh reported accidents in 2004, involving a huge social cost estimated at 2-3% of GDP.
