ATM heist one-off incident: Som Mittal, NASSCOM President

BANGALORE: Software services industry body NASSCOM President Som Mittal today said the $45-million worldwide ATM heist was a one-off incident and it was wrong to link it to India.

"I think it is a one-off incident and I think it is wrong to link it to India," he told reporters on the sidelines of a NASSCOM event here.

Mittal said cyber crimes are a matter of concern around the world and there have been hacking and breaching of most secure computers systems in the past.

Mittal said India has been very robust in terms of security practices and added that Indian IP Act is also robust, making enforcement and enactment actually good.

He said, "We are dealing with a different kind of criminals who are very smart. Cyber crime is a globalised issue. Even government sites are being hacked. Obviously, we are collaborating across the world and the industry has a strong public-private partnerships. I think we have to fight this battle (against cyber crime) all combined."

On US immigration reforms, Mittal said the biggest unintended consequence of the immigration reforms will be the impact it has on US business and economy.

"After all the work we do is to make customers competent and efficient. So anything that disrupts our work will disrupt US economy. I am sure that the (US) lawmakers will realise that," he said.

He also said it is very clear that there is a shortage in the US for high-skilled people.
