Aircel launches WiMax

With WiMax, end users can have access to internet based on portable technologies at affordable costs.

CHENNAI: Aircel Business Solutions (ABS), part of the Maxis owned Aircel group, on Tuesday announced the launch of its WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology here.
Announcing this at a press meet, Ram Shinde, Senior Vice President, ABS said the company would be launching the technology in 10 cities in the first phase and another 34 cities in the second phase.
With WiMax, end users can have access to internet based on portable technologies at affordable costs.
The roll-out in the first phase would require an investment of about USD 100 million. The company was investing USD three billion for 3G and WiMax roll out. Shinde said the roll out of WiMax across the 44 cities would be completed in about six months to one year.
The first phase would cover the four metros, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Delhi, Cochin and Ahmedabad.
To a query, Shinde said the WiMax roll out would be done across the country, along with cellular operations.
As of now, ABS has over 50 'hotspots' in the city with indoor and outdoor points back-hauled with WiMax and this would be increased to a "couple of thousands", he said.
"ABS aims to make Chennai 'wire free' using WiMax enabling wireless internet connectivity for SMEs,enterprise and residential use," he said.
"Initially, we are targeting 10 lakh SMEs and over 1,000 corporates for WiMax," he pointed out.
